On 3 July 1953, Hermann Buhl from Innsbruck achieves perhaps the greatest feat in the history of mountaineering: in a 41-hour push to the limit, he becomes the first person to climb an 8,000-metre peak alone and without bottled oxygen: Nanga Parbat. An incredible achievement. Hermann Buhl remains a legend to this day, one of the greatest climbers in the history of the Alps. This Bergwelten programme follows in Hermann Buhl's footsteps. Together with Alexander Huber, himself a climbing star and a great admirer of Buhl. He takes us to important stages in Buhl's life and meets people who were and are closely associated with him: Buhl's daughters Kriemhild and Silvia, two of his ‘alpine heirs’, Gerlinde Kaltenbrunner and Barbara Vigl, as well as Kurt Diemberger - himself a mountaineering legend and once Buhl's rope companion, who also witnessed his fatal fall. Buhl's alpine highlights are re-enacted in exciting re-enactments, including of course his solo attempt on Nanga Parbat and his tragic end on the Chogolisa. The film focuses on Buhl's mountaineering achievements, but also looks at some of the background and personal aspects that shaped Buhl as a person and alpinist. ‘Every successful completion of a journey becomes the prelude to the next one. Desire knows no boundaries, no permanent destination.’ Bergwelten pays tribute to the exceptional mountaineer Hermann Buhl. How can we understand his life and him? As an alpinist - but also as a person.
